The Expressive Figure
Every Wednesday of every month
This two-hour Zoom session coaches the figure drawing enthusiast past the challenges of technique toward finding one’s artistic voice. The class starts with a series of illustrated lectures, including top-down video demonstrations, followed by individualized critique based on homework or drawings submitted by the student. Following the critique we have thirty minutes of drawing from a Croquis Cafe video feed with a live model in a variety of poses. We finish up with a flash and discussion of our croquis drawing session. Each class features an informative discourse on an aspect of drawing from life, a particular work of Art, or a trend that has impacted the artistic evolution of figure drawing. Homework, usually based on the previous week’s Croquis session but not strictly limited to, helps the student to integrate the lessons into their practice, and thus all are encouraged to submit their homework for the critique.
All media are welcome and encouraged. Class website and resource page with assignments, references, and inspiration. All students are provided with a full video of the previous week’s session to watch at their leisure for each class they have enrolled in, so no one ever misses a class!
All skill levels recommended.

The Expressive Figure
The human figure has unlimited potential as a subject matter for creative expression. It is who and what we are. The Expressive Figure is a course which helps the figurative artist to develop techniques of visualization and provides guidance and intentions as a stimulus for creative development. Figure drawing is the act of imbuing a surface with figurative symbiology and then transferring this data into the mind of the beholder. Artistic anatomy is the common language that facilitates this dialogue. Despite the importance of drawing what we see, it is the application of what we know that breathes life into the figure. The Expressive Figure explores both these parameters with special emphasis on providing the student with intentions that explore techniques of visualization, of media and surfaces, and the dynamics of the drawing space.
